There are thousands upon thousands of great bars in America worth making a stool. But we have our favorites.
Those who accompany us warm us and disturb us not only by the drinks but by the general context. It could be a particularly talented bartender, a revolutionary menu, a remarkable design feat, or simply an aura for the municipality that you simply won't find anywhere else. It goes without saying that more than a year without many of these holy places feels like a decade. But alas, we are in the process of reopening, and, frankly, we are thirsty.
It's one thing to be a promising venue with an amazing new drink program.
For the first time in over a year. Again sitting side by side with friends, discussing esoteric spirits with the bartender, listening to strangers laughing - feeling new and raw. Despite the masked staff and social distancing, the experience has been surprisingly positive. Suddenly I started to feel myself again.
Maybe that's what I was drinking at Viridian, an Asian American bar in Oakland, a place on this year's best bars list; Many nodded to sample Asian candy cocktails. My dad surprised me when he returned from a grocery store in New York's Chinatown. But I doubt I would have struck a chord if it had been a drink at a bar that has reopened to do what the bar does best: hospitality.
The bar is both a place of life and a place of community in its own right. Get away from home and away from home. It disappeared as many people were forced to convert to take-out outlets, or worse, to shut down permanently. In a time when life, work, and family merge in a messy way, the bar is that extra space, physically, emotionally, that we could all use right now. back to the office? eh. ,, Not really. A place where you can have a Sazerac, take a moment, catch up with the world, and decide to party or worry?More generic like that, please.
This year's best bars reflect a desire to relive the wonder: wine and whiskey that makes the spirit grow, sip pints in old churches or snuggle up in a jazzy space - and be grateful for the places that are inherent in the fabric of America's drinking culture. A pioneering cocktail bar in Harlem, one of America's oldest dry bars, and quintessential Mission District dive are all on this year's list, our fifteenth.
Even when our bars are reborn, there are those who want to keep things out for a while, cow or not. I understand. We consider alfresco wine to be an essential part of bar culture, as it is in many other parts of the world. However, there is nothing quite like a real seat in a real bar. That's why bars are called bars, isn't it? Hope you can have that first cathartic drink on a stool soon again. Oddly, things are different, but you can also see some old lore through the ether - I have never seen (or seen) more hits in my twenties as a drinker on this planet. Of course, it's time to celebrate. at the bottom of the hatch.
